Birding

The Slaughter Ranch has been chosen to be a part of the "Southeastern Arizona Birding Trails". We are privileged to have many species of birds in our area. The House Pond provides a wonderful place for waterfowl, rails and other wetland birds.

These can be viewed from the picnic area where park benches are provided  for your comfort. Common sightings have been teals, gadwall, bufflehead, ruddy  duck, canvasback, grebes, blue herons, northern shovelers and pintails. You may get an occasional glimspe of a hooded merganser, white-faced ibis or an osprey

The Great Horned Owl

Several hawks, quail, coots, sora, rails, sandpipers, doves and the famous "Roadrunner" frequent the area. In March the hummingbirds arrive and stay until  late fall. During the migratory season the spectacular Western Tanager, buntings, warblers, Vermillion flycatchers, grosbeaks and bronze cowbirds put on a beautiful splash of color as they fly among the trees. This is definitely the best time to do birding, but many species can be seen throughout the year. Bring your binoculars, a sack lunch and plan to enjoy the entire day.
The San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge is also a part of the "Southeastern Arizona Birding Trails". You might consider visiting the refuge when you are in the area.
